Boxing, Fighter & Athlete Photographer, Brisbane
I am a boxing and athlete photographer based in Brisbane, making fighter portraits, fight-camp documentary and run club photography. Most of this archive was made in the gyms and on the tracks of Phuket.
Combat sport is usually photographed from ringside on fight night, which is fine for the result and poor for the person. What interests me is everything around it: the wraps going on, the weight cut, the long quiet hour in the change room. The work that gets a fighter to the night.
The same goes for running. Run clubs and training squads are made of early mornings and repetition. The best pictures tend to come from the warm-up and the walk home rather than the finish line.
Boxing and Muay Thai photography
Fighter portraits, promotional images for bouts, and documentary work inside a camp. The Yash Singh, Pavel Zajic and Russian Fight Camp series were made over weeks rather than hours, which is the only way I know to do it.
Run club photography
Before-dawn sessions, track nights and race days for run clubs and crews who want pictures that look like they felt. The Surakul Track and Big Buddha Run series are both from Phuket.
Athlete and gym portraits
Portraits of athletes and strength crews under hard light, for profiles, sponsors and gyms that would rather not look like a supplement advertisement.
Questions
Do you photograph boxing and Muay Thai fights in Brisbane?
Yes, though I am most useful in the lead-up: camp, weigh-in and walkout. Fight-night coverage depends on the promotion and venue.
Film or digital for sport?
Both. Fast action and low gym light often call for digital, and I will tell you honestly which suits the job. Several of the series here are digital.
Do you work with run clubs?
Yes, from a single session to a season. Early starts are not a problem.
