I am a music and band photographer in Brisbane, shooting press shots, release artwork and live sets, mostly on 35mm film. Recent work includes Last Dinosaurs and Client Liaison.
Bands need two kinds of photograph, and they are rarely the same shoot. The first is the press shot: the image that runs with the announcement, sits on the streaming profile and gets cropped into a hundred small squares. The second is the one that sounds like the record. I try to make both.
Film helps with the second. It has texture and a colour that belongs to a particular time, and it slows a session down enough for four or five people to stop performing for the camera and start standing like a band.
Band press shots
Group and individual portraits for announcements, publicity and streaming profiles, planned so they crop cleanly for every format a publicist asks for. Shot in the studio, on the street, or somewhere that makes sense for the music.
Album and single artwork
Cover images planned around the record rather than bolted on afterwards. I am happy to work to a designer's brief or develop the idea with you from the demo up.
Live and backstage
Live sets and the quieter hour before them. The Last Dinosaurs series includes frames from The Zoo in Fortitude Valley, on film, in the kind of light venues are famous for.
Questions
Do you shoot band press photos on film or digital?
Film by default, with digital alongside when a release schedule needs images the same week. We will decide together before the shoot.
Can you deliver images for streaming, press and socials?
Yes. I plan the frames so they work as a wide press shot, a square profile image and a vertical story crop.
Do you photograph live shows in Brisbane?
Yes, subject to the venue and the band. Get in touch with the date and room.
